Dimensioning of expendable timber packing aids

Here we measure the deflection of squared timbers.

The research project is intended to elaborate a practical basis for the dimensioning of expendable timber packing aids. To date there has been a lack of guidelines and standards regarding strength requirements for timber packing aids such as cases and crates. In cases of damage, it is standard practice to apply the rules used in the construction sector. But these rules result in requirements that are generally considered to be too high for timber packing aids. This would result in over-dimensioned timber packing aids if the construction sector rules had to be satisfied.

The research project looked into the typical product range of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The packaging experts from the BFSV and the Hamburg-based Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institut (vTI) determined the optimum dimensions and properties for load-bearing crate elements such as lengthwise skids, lid stringers and vertical battens. For this purpose they developed a calculation method based on the evidence concept of DIN EN 1995-1-1:2010-12 (Eurocode 5).

The findings of these studies are very encouraging: Simply as a result of the new evidence concept, it is possible to perform calculations based on 50% higher bearing strength figures than with the tensions permitted under DIN 1052:1988-04. This means that in future it will be possible to tailor the requirements for load-bearing crate elements more closely to the needs of the practical world.
