Transport packaging – BFSV’s focus for more than 50 years

Our goal right from the start: Secure packaging for shipment by sea.

We originated in the port of Hamburg. It was here that the BFSV (Beratungsstelle für seemäßige Verpackung) was founded in 1954: Ship operators and shippers needed expert help to get transport damage under control. And the close relationship between practical requirements and scientific work has been our hallmark right up to the present day.

  • Packaging research: As a member of the Federation of Industrial Research Associations (AiF) we carry out publicly funded research projects with a practical orientation. In these projects we mostly work with small and medium enterprises (SMEs). We investigate their issues arising from practical situations.
  • Practical advice: We use the findings from our research work to develop intelligent, reliable and economic packaging solutions and transfer them directly into the practical world.
  • Packaging testing: For technical assessment of packaging systems we make use of the potential of packaging testing – from determination of packaging parameters to simulation of shipment stresses. Here we collaborate closely with the packaging technology laboratory at the Faculty of Life Sciences of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences.
  • Academic teaching: A cooperation agreement links the Institute to the Faculty of Life Sciences of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. This guarantees that the findings from our practical research are transferred directly into teaching and promptly put into practice by the University’s graduates.
